Jana Nayagan release date verdict higlights: Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan release date hearing was scheduled at the Madras High Court today, January 20, after it hit a last-minute certification hurdle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan reserved the order, leaving Jana Nayagan’s release in limbo.
After facing more than a week’s delay in release, Vijay’s last film still doesn’t have a release date.
Jana Nayagan makers, KVN Productions, appealed to the Supreme Court of India on January 15. In a brief hearing, Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih provided no immediate relief to the film and urged the Jana Nayagan makers to make their arguments before the Madras HC Division Bench.
With no clarity on the relase date yet, makers are wary of the fate of what has been revealed to be a Rs 500 crore film. While Jana Nayagan is one of the most anticipated films of 2026, the legal roadblock has been a blow to Thalapathy Vijay fans and Jana Nayagan makers alike.

While fans are expressing their anguish over the release date delay, they are resolved to experience the film in theatres. After Madras HC reserved its order on Jana Nayagan release, a social media user wrote: "After the arrival of OTT system, I have not visited any cinema theatre for viewing any movies. But, CBFC’s higgledy-piggledy action to stop the release of the movie Jana Nayagan and its follow up action has tempted me to view it only at Cinema theatre whenever it is released."
As arguments concluded over the Jana Nayagan matter, The Madras HC reserved order still offering no clarity on the release of Vijay's film. Judgement to be pronounced on a later date.
As senior advocate Satish Parasaran concluded his arguments, senior advocate Pradeep Rai took over with his, on behalf of the production company. He reiterated that the producers were not given an documents and argued that as the Chairman had already decided to certify the film he could not send it back.
The ASG made rejoinder arguments and stated that it was incorrect to claim that a member could not file a complaint at a later date. He also stressed that there was a complaint regarding the portrayal of the Armed forces. "While showing armed force, protocol should be followed. It may not be decided by the committee alone, expert may be called. Whether the complaint is proper is to be decided by the chairperson," He said.
Senior advocate Satish Parasaran says that they have received approval in 22 other countries and as they wait for the release date in Bollywood, Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar 2 is already announced. He also argued that "the chairperson could not have gone back on his decision."

Parasaran said all the dates and records he relied on were available on the CBFC website, and argued that the member who later objected was required to give an opinion only after watching the film. “Even his subsequent opinion, it has been taken care of already through incisions,” he added.
He also countered the ASG’s claim about referring the film to a revising committee, stating that the December 29 decision and subsequent emails were only a communication and “not an order.”
Advocate Parasaran informed the Chief Justice that streaming platform Amazon Prime Video had stated the intent to sue the filmmakers if there was no clarity regarding the date of release on December 31, 2025. He also added that the producers had invested a lot money into the film.

According to the senior representatives of the board, a censor certificate, if issued, can also be recalled. "If the certificate is given, it is published in the gazette. The ASG explained to the court that sending Jana Nayagan to a second revision committee, according to the rules of the Cinematographers Act (1952). This comes after the Vijay-starrer was sent to the authorities on January 5, days ahead of the scheduled release on January 9.
Rule 37(7)(a) can also decide the time frame of 20 days for the committee to take the final call.

However, they argued in the Madras High Court today, "Whether this decision was right or not could have been gone into if a prayer of certiorari was made. I could respond only if a prayer is made. But here, relief was granted in the absence of prayer ."
To clarify, the Writ of Certiorari quashed orders of lower courts if they exceed the jurisdiction.
