Jana Nayagan release date: Thalapathy Vijay‘s film, Jana Nayagan, finally has its release date and fans, makers, and TVK party members are more than thrilled. As per SSR Entertainments, the Kerala distributors of the film, the release date is within the Pongal period. After facing a long legal ordeal, the Madras High Court green-lit its release and ordered the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A 16+ certificate to the Thalapathy Vijay-starrer.
However, responding to the judgement, the CBFC filed a writ appeal against the court’s order. Reacting to the crackdown of their non-jurisdictional complaint, the HC reserved its decision to grant the Thalapathy Vijay Rs 500 crore film permission to release. Delivering the judgment, Justice PT Asha observed that the complainant’s objections appeared to be an “afterthought” and cautioned that such interventions could set a “dangerous trend” within the film industry.
Jana Nayagan new release date: When is Vijay Thalapathy-starrer coming
Taking to social media, Jana Nayagan‘s reported Kerala distributor, SSR Entertainments, shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter) “January 14!”. However, the Thalapathy Vijay film is yet to receive its censor certificate from the CBFC, without which it cannot be released. Rescheduled from its original January 9 release date, Jana Nayagan might hit the theatres on January 14.
Why was Jana Nayagan delayed?
Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan ran into troubled waters after a member of the CBFC’s examining committee filed a complaint with the board’s chairman, alleging that their objections were not properly documented. The complaint claimed that the film hurt “religious sentiments,” prompting the CBFC to send it back for review. This came although the board had already suggested 27 cuts in December 2025 — including the removal of certain scenes and the muting of some dialogues — all of which the makers had complied with.
Following this setback, the makers, who had already spent heavily on promotions for a Pongal release, announced that the film’s release had been postponed, citing “unavoidable circumstances.” Made on a reported budget of Rs 500 crore, Jana Nayagan was slated to hit around 5,000 screens during Pongal 2026.
The high-stakes political drama is also being billed as Vijay’s last film before he steps into full-time politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Set for release in five major languages, the film features Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju in key roles. While the project has already locked a Rs 121 crore OTT deal, the makers are yet to announce a new release date.
