Hollywood is mourning the loss of Michelle Trachtenberg, the former child actress who rose to fame in the 1996 hit movie Harriet the Spy. Trachtenberg, 39, was found unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment on Wednesday morning, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene, with authorities confirming that no foul play is suspected. The New York Medical Examiner’s Office is currently investigating the cause of death.

A Life in the Spotlight

Trachtenberg began her acting career at the age of eight, starring as Nona Mecklenberg in Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete (1994–1996). She gained widespread recognition as the lead in Harriet the Spy (1996) and later co-starred in Inspector Gadget alongside Matthew Broderick.

Her breakthrough television role came in 2000 when she joined Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Dawn Summers, the younger sister of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character. She remained on the show until its conclusion in 2003. Trachtenberg also gained notoriety for her portrayal of the manipulative Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl, earning a Teen Choice Award nomination for Best TV Villain in 2012.

An Enduring Legacy

Throughout her career, Trachtenberg showcased her versatility with roles in Six Feet Under, Weeds, and Mercy, and appeared in films such as Ice Princess (2005), EuroTrip (2004), Black Christmas (2006), and 17 Again (2009). She also played Marina Oswald, the wife of Lee Harvey Oswald, in Killing Kennedy (2013), delivering a performance that required her to speak extensively in Russian—a language she learned from her mother.

More recently, she hosted the true-crime docuseries Meet, Marry, Murder on Tubi.

Hollywood Pays Tribute

Following the news of her passing, tributes poured in from colleagues and fans. Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star David Boreanaz expressed his grief on Instagram, calling the news “so very sad… horrible.” Actress Melissa Gilbert, who starred alongside Trachtenberg in A Holiday for Love, wrote, “My heart aches for your family and all those who loved you.”

Trachtenberg’s representative, Gary Mantoosh, released a statement on behalf of her family, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
