The Odia music world has lost one of its biggest stars today. Renowned composer Abhijit Majumdar passed away this Sunday, January 25, at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. He was only 54. Abhijit had been fighting several health problems, including liver disease, high blood pressure, and thyroid issues.
Majumdar’s health took a turn for the worse in September when he was first rushed to the hospital and put on life support. There was a small ray of hope around New Year’s Eve when doctors said he was getting better and might even go home. However, his health deteriorated again on Saturday night, and he couldn’t pull through. He leaves behind his wife, Ranjita, and their son.
A massive career in Ollywood
Abhijit was a powerhouse in the Odia film industry, or Ollywood as fans call it. He actually got his start way back in 1991 in the Sambalpuri music scene. By the time the year 2000 rolled around, he was the go-to guy for Odia movie soundtracks.

Over the years, he composed a staggering 700 songs. If you’ve seen hits like Sister Sridevi, Sundergarh Ra Salman Khan, or Love Story, you’ve heard his work. He had a knack for making songs that people just couldn’t stop humming. His very last project, a movie called Poglu, is expected to release later this year, which will be a final gift to his fans.
The industry in mourning
As soon as the news broke, social media was flooded with tributes from heartbroken fans and colleagues. People didn’t just lose a composer; they lost the man who provided the soundtrack to their favourite movies for decades.
Well-known actor and MLA Akash Das Nayak shared a touching message on X, saying he was deeply saddened and that Abhijit’s work would stay in people’s hearts forever. He prayed to Lord Jagannath for the composer’s family to have strength. It’s a huge loss for Odisha, but his music is definitely going to keep playing in every corner of the state for a long, long time.
