The massive success of Border 2 in early 2026 has turned into a major cultural event. It has been instrumental in drawing crowds back to theatres to watch a story based on the heroism of the 1971 Indo-Pak war; demonstrating that big-budget patriotic features are still in vogue.
While the movie is a Bollywood big blockbuster full of action and patriotic themes, it has also led to some very personal stories from the actors. Mona Singh, who plays the wife of Sunny Deol’s character, revealed that her connection to the 1971 war started decades before the film was made.
A real-life connection to the script
Mona Singh is the daughter of Jasbir Singh, a retired officer who fought in the 1971 war. During a success press conference for the film on February 12, 2026, she explained that she felt an immediate pull toward the role because of her family history.
“I am a fauji’s daughter and my dad fought the 1971 war,” she said, according to a Times of India report.
One specific moment in the film was particularly difficult for her to watch. In the movie, Sunny Deol’s character enters a minefield, which directly mirrors her father’s real-life injury. According to Bollywood Hungama, Mona shared:
“They stepped on a mine. My father lost his foot. So, the determination, the resilience, the fear, the anxiety, the pathos and pain that Simi Kaler’s character carries, I think I had already lived all of that because of my father.”
A tribute to military families
Her father’s injury occurred when he was a young, unmarried officer. Mona has often spoken about how her mother married him despite his injury, calling her parents’ bond a source of strength. During the media interaction in Mumbai, she emphasized that the film serves as an ode to the families who stay behind while soldiers are at the front.
“I, honestly, feel that when soldiers go to the border to fight, they don’t go there alone. Their families stand with them in that moment and we have seen that first hand. I loved every scene… It’s a tribute and ode to my father,” Singh was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
For Singh, the role was not just about acting but about representing the silent suffering and bravery of the people who support the military from home. She noted that the script “chose her” because she already understood the emotional weight of the story from her own life.
