The wait for Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, just got a little easier for his fans. With the superstar’s final film stuck in a bit of a scheduling nightmare, producers have decided to bring back one of his biggest hits, Theri, to the big screen this month.
Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu broke the news on Saturday, confirming that the 2016 blockbuster will return to theaters on January 15. It’s perfect timing, as the re-release marks the 10th anniversary of the movie that many fans still consider Vijay’s best work.
Why the sudden comeback?
The timing isn’t just about nostalgia. Vijay’s latest project, Jana Nayagan, was supposed to be the big talk of the town right now. But a mix of certification hurdles and legal back-and-forth has pushed the release date into limbo. The film was hit with delays just days before its planned opening, leaving a massive hole in the holiday movie schedule.

Rather than leaving fans empty-handed, the makers of Theri decided to step in. For many, Theri is the quintessential Vijay film. Directed by Atlee, it features the actor as a cop named Vijaya Kumar who tries to live a quiet life as a single father until his past catches up with him. It’s got everything the “mass” audience loves: heavy-hitting action, catchy music, and a genuinely sweet father-daughter bond that gave the movie its heart.
Three identities, one hero
While many fans remember Theri as a “double role” movie, Vijay actually plays one man living through three distinct identities. The story, directed by Atlee, follows a former police officer who fakes his death to keep his daughter safe.
– Joseph Kuruvilla: A quiet, soft-spoken bakery owner in Kerala who lives only for his daughter, Nivi (played by Baby Nainika).
– DCP Vijay Kumar: The “flashback” version of the character who is a fearless, stylish Chennai cop who takes on a corrupt politician (played by the legendary director J. Mahendran in his first acting role).
– Dharmeshwar: The mysterious third persona seen at the very end of the film, suggesting that the hero is still secretly working to take down criminals.
Why Theri became a record-breaking hit
When Theri first released in 2016, it didn’t just perform well, it dominated the box office. The film grossed over Rs 150 crore worldwide, a massive number at the time, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year.
It became a hit because it nailed the “emotional-action” balance. While the fight scenes and Vijay’s “swag” as a cop satisfied his hardcore fans, the tragic love story with Samantha (who played his wife, Mithra) and his adorable chemistry with Baby Nainika brought in families who usually stayed away from loud action movies. It proved that Atlee knew exactly how to package Vijay’s star power for everyone from kids to grandparents.
Legacy behind Theri
It’s hard to overstate how big Theri was when it first dropped. It didn’t just win over Chennai; it became the talk of the town pan-India. In fact, it’s the original story behind the upcoming Bollywood film Baby John, which stars Varun Dhawan. The fact that the story is still being told ten years later is a testament to why it’s being brought back now.
One last look at a superstar
For the fans, this re-release is bittersweet. Vijay has already made it clear that he’s walking away from the camera to focus on his political career with his party, TVK. With Jana Nayagan being his final movie, every chance to see him on a 70mm screen feels like a closing chapter.
While everyone is still refreshing their feeds for a new Jana Nayagan date, they’ll at least have a reason to head to the theaters this week. If you’re a fan who missed the “spark” of the original run, or just want to see the DCP back in action, January 15 is your day.
