Bollywood has changed a lot over the years. In the past, most movies were just about love stories or family drama. Today, things are different. Indian cinema now explores many new genres, like science fiction, fantasy, and high-stakes thrillers. With more money, better technology, and creative ideas, filmmakers are creating giant stories that people across the entire country enjoy. It doesn’t really matter anymore if it is a Bollywood film or any regional language film. If the story is great and the visuals are exciting, the audience will watch it.
However, making a movie at a grand level is very difficult. Even the best directors struggle to finish projects and one of the most famous examples is director Shekhar Kapur. He is a visionary who has made iconic films like Bandit Queen and Elizabeth.
But he is also famous for something else and that is not very inspiring. He has a long list of movies that he started but never finished. Over his career, Kapur has left at least 13 projects incomplete. These stops happened for many reasons, such as running out of money, having creative fights with producers, or the story becoming too complicated to film.
The mystery of Time Machine
The most talked-about “lost” film in Bollywood history is Time Machine. This was a science-fiction movie starring Aamir Khan in the 1990s. It was inspired by the Hollywood hit Back to the Future. The story was about an orphan boy who discovers a time machine built by a scientist (played by Vijay Anand) and travels back into the past. The cast was amazing. It included big stars like Raveena Tandon, Rekha, and Naseeruddin Shah. The most shocking part is that the movie was 75 per cent complete.
Most of the filming was done, but suddenly, the production stopped because there was no more money. Kapur eventually left to work on international projects. Years later, a movie called Action Replayy tried a similar time-travel theme, but it was not a success. Fans still wonder how great Aamir Khan’s Time Machine would have been if it had reached theaters.
Paani and other lost stories
Another famous project that failed to cross the finish line was Paani. This was a very important story about a future world where water is scarce and controlled by rich people. The late Sushant Singh Rajput was signed to be the lead actor and spent a long time preparing for the role, but the project was cancelled after Kapur had disagreements with the producer, Aditya Chopra.
This was not the first time something like this happened with Shekhar Kapur. Other films like Barsaat, Joshilaay, and Dushmani were also left midway. Many people in the film industry believe that Shekhar Kapur has ideas that are “too big” for the way Bollywood works. His vision is often more expensive and grander than what producers are willing to pay for.
Can Time Machine be remade?
Shekhar Kapur’s unfinished movies show us that there is a big gap between a great idea and a finished film. While it is sad that many of these stories were never told, there is still hope. Today producers with big budgets and better VFX technology, there are rumors that Time Machine could be remade. If Kapur can finally finish these ambitious projects, it would change Indian cinema forever.
