Kerala will incur an additional R5,277 crore salary bill with the state’s 10th pay commission recommending a 12-13.5% hike for government staff and teachers, effective from July 1, 2014.

The C N Ramachandran Nair commission report, handed over on Monday to chief minister Oommen Chandy, has also mooted raising the retirement age from the present 56 years to 58 years. This would relieve the government of the compulsion to disburse substantial sums as retirement benefits at one go and give a breather for two years.

State government pensioners will also get a corresponding hike.
