The decks are cleared for Kerala getting declared as the first state in the country to achieve “total primary education”. Vice-President Hamid Ansari is slated to do the honours of announcing this at a function here on January 13.
The declaration will mark the grand finale of the second phase of ‘Athulyam’ Class 4 equivalency programme — for persons aged between 15 and 50, state education minister PK Abdu Rabb told FE.
Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority had roped in the infrastructure and manpower from 999 civic bodies across the state to implement the programme. “It was a herculean task to string together government officials, innumerable volunteers and NGOs and to motivate the candidates for primary education coverage. The initial work for this had started in 2000,” says M Sujay, director, Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority.
