Reuters Top 75: Asia’s Most Innovative Universities, a list by the the top news Agency that identifies educational institutions has been announced and India’s report card isn’t a very rosy one. India, World’s second largest in population lacks big time in the education sector and the recent list just sealed it.
While majority of the Universities are from smaller regional neighbours Japan and South Korea, while big nations like China and India lag behind.
The only two Universities from India, or to say the only saving grace are the The Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The ranking being 72 and 73 being out of all the 75 competing.
Though the performance is dismal, serious consideration also needs to go in the same. While the Govt is regularly updating educational system by bringing new amendments now and then, research is one the arenas that Indian system is lacking in. The Reuters list focuses on academic papers, which indicate basic research performed at a university, and patent filings, which point to an institution’s interest in protecting and commercializing its discoveries.
The organisation of the education system, technology wise, planning, methodology together account for the performance and underperformance of a nation in such lists. While Indian education system is on constant reforms, many news including the latest Bihar Board scam end up putting a question tag on it.
