Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will establish a Centre for Hindu Studies, along with centres for Buddhist and Jain studies, as announced in an official notification. These centres will be part of the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies.

The Executive Council of JNU approved the creation of these centres during a meeting on May 29. To facilitate the implementation of the National Education Policy (2020) and the Indian Knowledge System at the university, a committee was formed.

According to a notification released on July 9, “The Executive Council in its meeting held on 29.05.2024 has approved the recommendation of the committee to explore and recommend NEP-2020 and the Indian Knowledge System, along with the establishment of these centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies.”

Last year, Delhi University (DU) made a significant addition to its academic landscape by establishing a Centre for Hindu Studies. This new centre currently offers a master’s degree programme. In an effort to expand its educational offerings, DU also plans to introduce undergraduate courses in this field, aiming to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in Hindu studies.

Alongside the Centre for Hindu Studies, Delhi University boasts a prominent Department of Buddhist Studies, which has played a crucial role in promoting academic research in Buddhist philosophy, history, and practices. This initiative has an estimated budget of Rs 35 crore.
