Indian Railways’ ICF creates history! The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has manufactured as many as 301 coaches in the month of February, taking the total for this fiscal to 2,919. Interestingly, this puts the factory among the largest railcar builders in the world, beating top Chinese manufacturers who produce around 2,600 coaches a year. Financial Express Online learns that this is the second time in the year, the factory has crossed the 300 coaches per month mark. So far, the total production this year (April-February) is 2919 against 2085 in the corresponding period last year. This means a 40% increase in production. The ICF is now eyeing ending the financial year with over 3200 coaches.
A senior official was quoted in a PTI report saying that the rate at which the factory is manufacturing coaches, ICF will certainly end up at over 3,200 this financial year. He also said that this number not only makes the Indian Railways coach factory the world’s largest railcar builder but also bigger than the remaining five of India put together. The ICF has also churned out the newly launched country’s fastest train Vande Bharat Express between the April-February period. Indian Railways has placed an order for 44 more Vande Bharat Express train sets with ICF. The first rake out of 44 is currently being manufactured. The remaining 43 Vande Bharat Express train sets are likely to be rolled by the ICF during the next three production years in phases.

Meanwhile, Indian Railways-owned Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh too has ramped up production and has manufactured as many as 143 coaches in the month of February, this year. According to the official, a cumulative total of 1,283 coaches have been manufactured by MCF this year against 586 coaches in the same period last year. This has led to an increase of 118 per cent in MCB’s coach production. Interestingly, the factory is now gearing up to achieve a production level of 1,422 coaches this year, double that of last year’s 711, the official added.
