Mars International India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Maharashtra for setting up a greenfield chocolate plant in Pune for an investment of Rs 1,005 crore. The state has granted the chocolate plant a ‘mega project’ status. Mars International India is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mars Inc.
The plant will make the Snickers and Galaxy brands. The company said the investment was a significant step towards deepening Mars International India’s presence. The project is expected to generate direct employment opportunities for over 200 people and indirect employment to over 1,000 people. Maharashtra CM Devendra Phadanavis said the project will be a great success story for Make in India – Make in Maharashtra as currently all the company’s products were being imported.
MV Natarajan, GM, Mars International India, said India’s chocolate industry was growing at nearly 20% and this was a huge opportunity for the company to expand its portfolio. Pune is an investor-friendly and progressive city and its climate, geography, talent availability, proximity to port, access to raw material and proximity to demand made it one of the most viable locations for chocolate manufacturing.
Ehab Abou-Oaf, regional president, Mars Chocolate, Asia Pacific, said, “India is one of the most rapidly emerging chocolate markets in the world and we hope to capitalise on that through this manufacturing plant.”
The Pune plant will be an eco-friendly and LEED gold- certified facility, and it will boost capacity to support the growing demand for Mars chocolates in India.
In India, Mars operates in two categories — a pet care manufacturing and marketing business and chocolate importation and marketing operations. The chocolate segment’s corporate office is in Gurgaon while the pet care business’ corporate office is in Hyderabad. Mars India’s pet food products include Pedigree and Whiskas while the chocolate portfolio includes Snickers, Galaxy, Mars, Bountry and Twix.
