We talked to Vinay Pant, assistant vice-president, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. He shared with us that the Ertiga is a vehicle for a person who needs the convenience of an MPV at the price of a C-segment sedan. Excerpts:

The Ertiga created a new segment of compact, family-oriented MPVs…

On April 12, 2012, when we launched the Ertiga, it redefined the MPV segment. Many urban families were looking for a vehicle that offered more space and flexibility than a sedan, without being bulky, bland and expensive. The Ertiga was designed for such customers.

The Ertiga has been doing well ever since its launch. It has found preference amongst typical private sedan buyer who needs the convenience of an MPV at the price of a C-segment sedan. The Ertiga has another advantage: it is offered in petrol, diesel and CNG fuel options. The petrol is also available with automatic transmission. Top-end variants have class-leading features like Apple CarPlay.

What is the Ertiga SHVS?

Last year, to inject the much-needed freshness in the MPV segment, we introduced the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology in the Ertiga. With this, the Ertiga became the first vehicle in its segment to be offered with a ‘mild hybrid’ technology. The SHVS Ertiga has also qualified for an incentive by the government to promote environment-friendly cars. Customer response was good: the SHVS variant now accounts for over 60% sales of the Ertiga.

What has been the average market share of the Ertiga in the MPV segment?

It enjoys a market share of over 20% in the Indian MPV segment.

How many units have you sold?

We have sold over 2.8 lakh units of the Ertiga cumulatively.

When did you start exporting the Ertiga?

We started exports in 2013. As on date, we have exported the Ertiga to more than 40 countries. Cumulatively, we have exported over 21,000 units.

Which fuel variant of the Ertiga sells the most?

In this segment, diesel is the preferred fuel option. Over 60% sales of the Ertiga come from the SHVS-powered trim. The demand of petrol and CNG variants is in line with our expectations.
