Taking a cue from peers, German carmaker Volkswagen managed to register 18% y-o-y growth in the domestic market in April.

Volkswagen sold 3,572 units in April compared to 3,033 units in the same period last year on the back of good performances from new products like the Jetta and Vento Magnific. The Polo continued to draw decent volumes.

Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said the overall sentiment in the Indian automotive industry is positive, which had a very good effect on sales.

“We are particularly encouraged by our customers’ response to the DSG-equipped variants of the Vento and the Polo GT. The growth we achieved in April is higher than the industry average, and we remain confident of continuing to improve our sales figures over the coming months”, said Mayer.

Pointing towards a recovery in the Indian economy, medium and heavy commercial vehicles continue their good performance.

Ashok Leyland — the second largest commercial vehicle manufacturer — posted a 45% year-on-year increase in MHCV sales to 6,549 units. Light commercial vehicles grew 37 % to 1886 units during the same period.

Overall, commercial vehicle sales increased 43% y-o-y to 8,435 units in April for the Chennai-based company.

Analysts say fleet operators have started to add new trucks to their fleet as they expect increased availability of cargo from the manufacturing and mining sector in coming months.
