Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met delegates of the Central Trade Unions (CTU) ahead of the 46th Indian Labour Conference (ILC).

The Prime Minister’s meeting comes at a time when various trade unions are protesting against certain amendments proposed by the government.

“We opposed the government’s move to change the labour laws which will hurt the interest of the workers… We made it clear, without talking to trade unions, they’re going to change labour laws. This is unacceptable,” said Gurudas Dasgupta, General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC).

“There’s no assurance from them. Therefore our stand for strike on September 2 stands,” he added.

Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the two-day Labour Conference tomorrow in the national capital.
