One of China’s biggest smartphone vendor Xiaomi Corp has revealed its first contender to Apple’s iPhone 7. It is unlikely of the company since it is generally known as the purveyor of great budget smartphones. Xiaomi always has had a tendency to make smartphones based on the look of Apple and Samsung’s latest devices and also name them similarly. Even the operating system, which is a highly modified version of Android, also has the feel of iOS. Yet the phones have been very decent for their price range and has been a hit in the number of countries it is sold in. As far as Xiaomi’s latest Mi 5S is concerned, merge the screens of Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy, you will get an idea how the 5.15-inch screen looks like. Though Xiaomi did not break many barriers with the Mi 5, but with Mi 5S, it has brought in really innovative features to challenge Apple.

The Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus is a very powerful smartphone, which is powered by Qualcomm’s one of the speediest processors along with having a 6 GB memory. The device has a screen with the ability to detect different degrees of pressure which resemble the 3D Touch feature by Apple. The fingerprint scanner in the new smartphone might be mistaken to be similar to that on the iPhone, but it is different. The 128 GB variant of the phone has and ultrasonic scan technology sensor which is embedded directly below the front glass. So the sensor need not be fitted externally which gives the phone more durability. It also has a 13 MP camera, which feels very similar to last year’s Nexus smartphones. These cameras have a low resolution yet makes use of large pixels to create better sensitivity. With LTE network aggregation the phone offers great call quality. So in the area of specifications, Mi 5S stacks up well against the iPhone. Xiaomi had received a hit in its home market when Huawei and Oppo raced passed it, but this maybe the company’s chance to grab the limelight yet again, even more so because of the recall of Samsung phones all over the world.

While Apple is trying hard to reach an unbeatable top spot in the biggest market that is China, yet its market is getting squeezed because of its premium smartphones. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are too costly for that market and there are no SE or C models this year. This gives Xiaomi to reach that spot with very competitive pricing and innovative technology. With a very competitive price, the cheaper variant of the Mi 5s will be sold in China for 1999 Yuan ($390), while the costlier one, the 128GB phone will be sold for around $450. Xiaomi has also started to sell a range of other devices like Televisions and robot vacuums, which gives it an edge there too.

The area in which Xiaomi lacks is that it is not as open as that of Android, nor can it achieve optimisations which Apple can do, by using homegrown technology. Xiaomi also does not make water resistant devices. Additionally, Xiaomi has never spoken openly about user data privacy. In fact, it even got mired in a controversy when there were complaints that its Chinese Mi Cloud servers were storing user data, which then was made an optional feature by Xiaomi.

It is only a matter of time when users will be able to tell if Xiaomi’s Mi 5S has been able to live up to the high vision painted by the specifications on paper. If we go by past records, this smartphone will indeed be a strong, powerful device at that price along with a decent build and design. Yet, some of the features which are the hallmark for both Apple and Samsung might be missed by consumers.
