The best camera is the one you have with you—all the time, and everywhere. Thanks to the camera on your smartphone, you can capture all the precious moments in your life, be it a family function, an outing with your friends or even the most beautiful sunset. Present-day smartphones are also your complete entertainment system. You can listen to your favourite songs by downloading them and using your phone as an MP3 player, or use numerous free music apps.

Many smartphones have good cameras and music-playing capabilities these days, but the mobility devices from Chinese handset maker Vivo stand out from the rest by a huge margin. Take, for instance, its V5, V5 Plus devices, which have been quite popular among the Indian consumers, especially because of their photography and music features. Vivo has now debuted its V5s device with 20 MP front camera in elegant Matte Black finish (it is also available in Crown Gold colour); it will retail for Rs 18,990 when it hits the store near you and online on, from May 6 later this week. Here are some of my impressions about the Vivo V5s.

V5s is the latest addition to Vivo’s V5 series, which already includes V5 Plus and V5. Earlier, I had reviewed the V5 Plus device and straight away, some comparisons can be drawn between the two phones. Like its predecessor, the V5s is an attractive device with an elegant design. It has a metal build which gives it a sturdy feel; the phone is comfortable to hold and operate with one hand. It has a 5.5-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, the display is quite detailed and smooth. V5s has a unique extremely fast fingerprint unlocking feature; it unlocks the screen in just 0.2 seconds.

Switched on, I headed straight to check out its photo and video-taking capabilities. I must say there is no better way to express yourself than through imagery and the V5s’ 20 MP front camera equips you sufficiently for the perfect snap, whether it’s a close-up selfie, group selfie with friends or distant landscape shot. There’s also a 13 MP rear camera which lets you capture any moment in striking quality. Both cameras also offer the ability to capture high-definition video in crisp detail. During the review period, both the cameras performed in a splendid manner; video was fine and photos had very good image sharpness.

I have been using the V5s for over a week now and its speed and processing power have really amazed me no end. Technical speak, this performance is provided through a 64-bit MediaTek MT6750 1.5 GHz octa-core processor, ensuring the V5s always delivers a smooth and seamless experience, whether you are showing off your latest videos, playing your favourite game, or listening to music through the device’s great sounding speakers. The octa-core 64-bit processor enables users to experience smooth functioning of the device even while multitasking. In fact, the combination of high-quality audio with a vibrant 5.5-inch HD screen makes the V5s perfect for catching up on the latest hit shows or streaming the next big viral video.

The V5s runs on Funtouch OS 3.0 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is paired with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB ROM, which is expandable up to 256 GB. It is powered by a 3000 mAh non battery which can easily last two days of moderate use. Sensors on the phone include Accelerometer, ambient light sensor, Proximity Sensor, E-compass, Gyroscope (Virtual). Important apps include Hangouts, Facebook, Maps, News & Weather, Play Games, Gmail, Chrome, Google Search, YouTube, Play Music, Play Movies & TV, Photos, Play Store, VivoCloud, WPS. There’s another rich-feature: The smart screen-split feature allows users to multitask without having to switch back and forth every time a message pops up. Users can chat and watch videos simultaneously on one screen.

In summary, the V5s has smooth performance, long battery life, with the camera a big draw. Its processor, coupled with 4 GB of RAM, should be more than sufficient to launch apps, play games, and browse the Web without any hiccups. There shouldn’t be any complaints as far as call quality and data speeds are concerned too. All in all, the V5s is a dependable Android offering from Vivo, and the Rs 18,990 price does seem like a steal. Highly recommended.
