When opened the site reads, “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.”
After 13 years of service, torrentz.com has completely shut down its search functionality and removed all the links. The homepage is still active, though. This has been the second incident of a popular torrent website being shut down in a matter of two weeks. Earlier, Kickass torrents had been shut down following the arrest of its alleged founder Artem Vaulin in Poland.Although the site never hosted a torrent of its own, it acted as one of the largest meta-search engines in the world, using torrents from a variety of trackers and serving it to millions of users from around the world.
The reasons for the sudden shutdown haven’t yet been revealed. When opened the site reads, “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.” The sites users are not able to log in either. Instead, a “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell” message is shown to the user. Torrentz predates thepiratebay.se and was one of the most popular torrent search engines in the world.
After Kickass torrent founder was caught by the police in Poland, and the site was taken down, a lot of mirror sites opened up helping the users. It would be too early to comment on whether such an incident will occur after the death of this site.
