Samsung Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor has six cores - two ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz
Samsung has announced its new Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor to add to its chipset portfolio. The newly-launched Samsung Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor is built using the 14-nanometre FinFET process technology, which features a hexa-core CPU designed specifically for mid-tier smartphones. The Exynos 5 Series 7872 embeds a high-speed LTE modem that is claimed to offer peak data speeds up to 300Mbps for downloading and 150Mbps for uploading. The Meizu M6s is the first smartphone that packs Samsung Exynos 5 Series 7872 SoC under the hood, while some other Samsung and non-Samsung mid-range devices could be launched in the future.
The Samsung Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor has six cores – two ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz. The company says that the processor ‘improves the individual single-core performance by two folds, when compared to its predecessor, enabling faster web browsing, app launching and other operations on a smartphone in its class’. Additionally, the Samsung Exynos 5 Series 7872 processor is coupled with a Mali-G71 MP1 GPU to deliver smooth graphics. As we said, the processor features a 14nm FinFET process technology that can board up to LPDDR3 RAM types.
The connectivity support on the Samsung Exynos 5 Series 7872 includes a built-in LTE Cat 7 2CA that is rated to deliver up to 300Mbps downloading and 150Mbps uploading speeds. There is also the GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, and Galileo support given on the processor with the help of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver, alongside Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.5GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth 5, and FM radio support. The processor can support a display unit featuring a WUXGA resolution of up to 1,200×1,920 pixels.
The Samsung Exynos 7872 system-on-chip will deliver photography capabilities for up to 21.7-megapixel rear and front cameras along with out-focusing and dual camera features. It can support full-HD video encoding and decoding at 120fps with HEVC(H.265) and H.264 codecs. “By combining the information from RGB and monochrome camera, the Exynos 7872 can create out-focus effect to make photographs more visually appealing.”
