Reliance Jio announced the Jio Phone last week and it will go on sale officially in September. The pre-bookings of the Jio Phone will begin from August 24, though users can register on the company’s website to show their interest in the device. As of now, the specs and features of the JioPhone have not been yet revealed, at least not all of them. But the Jio Phone has already created a buzz in the market. It is the cheapest feature phone with 4G VoLTE support to be available in India. Added to this is the effectively Rs Zero price tag. While there are a lot of questions on the specs and features of the Jio Phone, there are many speculations doing the rounds as well. While reports have suggested that the Jio Phone will have several variants based on price, specs, camera, battery and other features, as of now only one thing is certain- the Jio Phone will at least come in 2 models.

The Reliance Jio Phone will arrive in two variants and they will be based on the chipsets powering them. One of the phones will come with a Qualcomm processor, and another could come with a Spreadtrum chipset. On July 21, Qualcomm India had tweeted saying, “Glad to partner with @reliancejio on the new #JioPhone, powered by our #205 mobile platform.” The indication was that the Reliance JioPhone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 processor. But interestingly another player, Spreadtrum Communications has also tweeted about how they are partnering with JioPhone. The tweet from Spreadtrum reads, “Making India digital with #JioPhone. @Spreadtrum is proud to be a part of the digital freedom for #featurephone users. @Reliancejio.” This particular tweet doesn’t mention which processor or SoC from the company is being used, unlike the Qualcomm one, which says the Snapdragon 205 processor is being used.

It is interesting to note that earlier Lava had launched its 4G feature phone called Lava Connect. That phone used the Spreadtrum SC9820, which is a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and has support for TDD-LTE, FDD-LTE and 4G VoLTE. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio Phone looks like any other feature phone with its Alphanumeric keyboard and has a 2.4-inch QVGA display, a dedicated torchlight button. There is also a headphone jack, microphone, speaker, and FM Radio feature as well. Jio says users can also rely on voice commands to carry out tasks on the JioPhone, and the phone will come pre-loaded with Jio apps including JioCinema, so people can watch movies on the phone as well.
