Everybody is making smartphones these days. Acer, Micromax, Samsung, Lava, LG, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Sony, Panasonic, Xolo—I might be forgetting a few names here, but the number of brands is not a coincidence. The India mobile handsets market is booming nowadays and 257 million units were shipped in CY 2014. Of this 77 million were smartphones accounting for nearly 30% of all shipments, a first for India. The smartphone segment is seen as the most attractive segment of the market; this particular segment grew at 46% vis-a-vis CY 2013.

Sounds like a smartphone glut in the market place, isn’t it? But no one makes smartphones like HTC, the Taiwanese device maker. I just love the build quality that its phones provide and the look is also great. In particular, there is something unique about handsets from its Desire series; they are a power packed combination of innovative design and smooth functioning. For the past few days, I have been simultaneously testing three new handsets and among them, the HTC Desire 526G+ dual SIM stands out with its elegant looks and smooth performance.

While I found the phone’s size quite daunting at first, in terms of functionality I have not been disappointed. The HTC Desire 526G+ dual SIM is a phone in a class of its own. While the 8 GB model is available on snapdeal.com for R10,400, the 16 GB variant retails for R11,400 and is available across major retailers in the country. Let us check out the phone for its various features and performance.

On first impressions, the most striking feature of this HTC phone is its elegant styling and good build quality. From its looks down to the feel and ease of usage would make any user of the Desire 526G+smile with assurance at the acquisition of this device. Given its price tag, what HTC is trying to do is put a good phone in everyone’s hands, without compromising on features and specifications. It measures 139.8 x 69.65 x 9.8 mm in body dimensions, the power button, volume control and proximity sensor are on the right side of the phone, front camera is on the top and speaker and USB connector at the bottom. There are two micro SIM card slots present, making it easy to switch between multiple mobile accounts and manage both work and personal profiles from one device.

Once in the hand, the HTC Desire 526G+dual SIM is pretty comfortable to hold and it has a nice grip to it. When you switch on the device for the first time, you’ll be asked to set it up. Walk through the on-device setup to choose your Internet connection and more. You can also sign in to your Google account. The HTC Desire 526G+ dual SIM sports an impressive 11.93 cm (4.7 inch) qHD screen, ensuring the best viewing experience for updates from your favourite news source and social sites—Twitter and Facebook. The crisp detail and rich colour makes the information easy to digest whenever you glance at your phone. It has a 1.7 GHz Octa-Core processor, powerful enough to meet any challenge, no matter how you want to use your phone. Whether you want to take high quality photos and selfies to fast web browsing, silky-smooth graphics on a stunning display when watching videos or playing games, or simply the ability to switch between multiple apps, smooth and fast performance comes as a standard with this device.

Among the prominent features, HTC BlinkFeed brings your favourite content direct to your home screen. To put it straight, it is basically a content and social updates aggregation service which puts your world in one screen. Once configured, you can get up-to-date in an instant; it allows you to enjoy social posts, breaking news, sports updates and more—all based on what you like, all in one place.

With the Offline Reading mode, it’s now possible to view articles from your personal feed, drawn from more than 20,000 articles a day from the world’s leading media companies, making it an ideal option for those on a limited data plan. Simply add up to 120 articles to your reading list when connected to Wi-Fi and access them later to enjoy data-free reading on the move.

Talking about its photo and video-editing capabilities, then your pictures and video clips can be automatically turned into a professional- looking show reel of your best moments. Select photos taken with the HTC Desire 526G+ dual SIM’s 8 MP rear facing camera and a 2 MP front facing camera, place them in your preferred sequence and choose your favourite tracks and effects to create impressive videos to share with friends and family through social networks.

These days, the users are seeking devices that are feature rich but are available at an affordable price. I have been satisfied from every aspect with this phone, it has excellent specs, always runs smoothly, and its build quality is great too. It feels great in your hand and has a very premium feel. By any measure, it is a good choice for the tech-savvy yet value-conscious Indian consumer. A masterpiece in its price segment.
