There is something different about Obi mobile phones. Amidst the deluge of mobile devices in the marketplace, offerings from Obi Mobiles (its promoter is the former CEO of Apple Computer, John Sculley) stand out in the crowd by having unique names such as the Octopus, Wolverine, not to mention a great design, sturdy build and nifty performance—all sold at reasonable price points. The products are basically designed keeping in mind the youth of India. Company officials reckon that the key factor that is driving the consumer preference towards the smartphones is fashion; it is not technology because the technology is all similar now. Today, phones are not used to make calls alone, it’s more about the applications, camera, messaging as well as user interface.

No wonder, Ob Mobiles is focussing more on the user interface as well as the styling of its devices. Recently, the company sent two of its brand new mobile phones—Alligator and Hornbill—to us for a product evaluation. Let us check them out.

Alligator (S454)

In terms of design and build quality, this is easily the biggest standout of the Alligator. This thing looks great, somewhat similar to the iPhone 5s in its appearance. Everything is nicely centered on the Alligator, with a top-mounted headphone port and microUSB port. Speaker grills sit at the back while the power button has a nice texture to it and is located on the right hand side of the phone.

The Obi Alligator’s Android KitKat 4.4.2 operating system and 1.3 GHz Quad-core processor are just two of the many alluring features that will make you savour the magic of this phone. I have been using this phone for one week now and I can say this with confidence. That is not all. Along with lightning fast app performance, the Alligator also packs in dual SIM functionality, pre-loaded apps, and an 8 megapixel rear camera with flash, qHD recording and playback. Colours on the phone’s 11.43 cm, QHD IPS touchscreen are bright and saturated with great contrast. In my opinion, the screen offers a satisfactory balance of size, resolution and output to deliver what you want from your smartphone screen without destroying your battery.

Probing the innards, the Alligator’s 1.3 GHz Quad-core processor operates numerous apps speedily and never misses a beat. Something similar to BlackBerry’s Hub, the Alligator’s Android KitKat 4.4.2 OS comes with the Hangouts app that gets all your conversations together in one place. So, while the OS does its job of running your phone efficiently, the added perks like automatic contact prioritisation, fully immersive screen and the ‘OK Google’ feature ensure that you get a little extra out of every moment.

The Alligator lets you capture and replay all your special moments with qHD recording and playback, which is sure to bring a smile to your face. And you can use that smile for when you want to click away with the 8 MP Auto Focus rear camera and the 2 MP front camera. The Alligator comes pre-loaded with apps that are bound to be helpful, like Truecaller that finds details of phone numbers you don’t know or Hungama that plays songs on the go. The Obi Alligator also gives you the option to chat in upto 18 regional languages.

Put simply, it’s time to try some Alligatorade.

In my usage, the Hornbill came across as a super-fast and responsive phone which stands up well to any other mobile phones in its price range, outperforming some of the even pricier offerings in terms of feel and performance. The Hornbill is certainly a good looking, nice feeling, and a premium-styled device in its price range.
