The Android 8.1 Oreo update for Nokia 8 brings new features and enhancements including Neural Networks API, refreshed power menu, new Settings, Bluetooth battery percentage display, and new developer APIs (API level 27)
Nokia 8 has begun receiving the Android 8.1 Oreo update for the beta testers under the Nokia Beta Labs programme that was reintroduced last year by HMD Global, the company that now holds the Nokia brand licence. Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, on Twitter announced that the Android 8.1 Oreo beta update is now rolling out to Nokia 8. The Android 8.1 Oreo update will bring a lot of improvements to Nokia 8, but most importantly fix the ‘hamburger’ emoji with “cheese now on top of the patty”. The update is now available to download from the Nokia Beta Labs website.
The Nokia 8 Android 8.1 Oreo beta update (v4.82A) is 1.55GB in size and comes with the Android Security Patch for the month of January. The update will be available to the members of Nokia Beta Labs programme who own a Nokia 8 device. There is also an option to revert the Android 8.1 Oreo version to Android Nougat, but it will also end your membership at the same time.

The update also addresses many fixes, but Juho Sarvikas emphasises that the hamburger emoji on Android will now look the right way. Last year, an outcry began over the placement of cheese in the burger emoji on Android, which was contrary to its counterpoint on iOS. The burger emoji on iOS had the cheese placed on the top of patty while the Android emoji had it below the patty. Google CEO Sundar Pichai joined the conversation and said he would “leave everything else to address this issue”. It was later when the emoji was redesigned to place the patty in the middle with the cheese slice atop.
