Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL)  that offers mobile phone and internet services under the brand name MTS on Monday announced special tariff plans for phone calls made through internet,  at prices as low as 10 paise per minute for domestic or international calls. The special plans are targeted at phone calls using any over-the-top (OTT) voice messaging app services such as WhatsApp, Viber, Google Chat, Facebook Messenger, and Skype amongst others.

A 5GB data pack would cost a pre-paid subscriber about Rs 499, which translates into 5,000 minutes of phone calls using internet-based services, Sistema Shyam said in a statement. Similarly, postpaid customers can opt for rental plans starting Rs 599 for 10 GB data, it said.

The move comes at a time when mobile phone operators have been battling against such OTT apps, offering voice service using their network for free and offering much cheaper calls using their app, in turn jeorpadising their revenue from phone calls. Mobile phone operators get almost 90% of their revenue from phone call charges.

MTS India’s chief marketing officer, Sandeep Yadav said: “MTS India does not support any discrimination or preferential treatment when it comes to internet services. It is our belief that the freedom to access and use internet services the way a customer wants should rest with the customer himself. Our latest “Anti-Zero Rating Plans” allow customers the freedom to use data for internet calling if they wish to.”

With the new tariff plans for internet-calls, MTS subscribers would pay almost 75% less for national and international internet calls using Voice of Internet Protocol (VoIP) apps, compared to the charges they would pay for making a call using their mobile phone networks.

SSTL provides mobile phone services in nine of the 22 telecom circles, the country is divided into. It has over 55% of its revenue through non voice services.

MTS internet plans for prepaid users are 1 GB for Rs 198, 2GB for Rs 248, 3GB for Rs 399, 5 GB for Rs 499 and 7 GB for Rs 699 all valid for 28 days. Similarly for postpaid users, for 10 GB data the monthly rental plan is of Rs 599, 14 GB for Rs 799, 24 GB for Rs 999 and 30 GB for Rs 1999.
