This ultra high-definition TV delivers clear images and is apt for watching fast-paced sporting events

The 4K revolution is upon us. If you have been following the television industry, 4K TV is something that manufacturers have been pushing in recent months. Also known as ultra high-definition (UHD) or ultra HD, 4K is the next step-up in resolution of flat-screen displays, offering four times the pixel resolution of a regular 1080p HDTV. Just to give you a better perspective, a 4K UHD TV has four times the resolution of Full HD 1080p TVs.

Regular HDTVs have 2 million pixels (1920 x 1080), while a 4K TV has 8 million pixels (3,840 x 2,160). For an ordinary viewer, this is the same resolution as a movie theatre.

Micromax, which has already established its position as a leading player in the India mobile phone market, is now aggressively foraying into the ultra high-definition TV space. Recently, this New Delhi-based firm debuted its first 4K ultra high definition television range. The range is available on Flipkart in 42-inch and 49-inch variants, priced reasonably at R39,990 and R49,990 respectively.

We got the 49-variant for a product evaluation, and to be fair, reviewing a TV is a cumbersome exercise. Unlike a mobile phone, tablet, camera or a laptop, which are normally dissected on my review table, in the case of a TV one has to find an appropriate place to install it. At my end, I mounted it on a wall in my TV room by bringing down my own Sony LED TV, despite protests from other family members. But once the Micromax TV came to life, the breathtaking visuals gradually silenced the murmurs of protests and the viewing opinion changed in its favour.

The new Micromax 4K UHD TV targets the consumers who want a larger than life experience and desire to access smart Android content on a bigger, sharper, crystal clear screen. Offering a confluence of sleek design and technology, this Micromax innovation delivers a sharp and smart cinematic entertainment experience. Aesthetically appealing, the UHD television comes with ultra-sleek 1.28 cm design boasting of a full golden metal frame and glass finish back. With a 178-degree viewing angle, one can enjoy consistent colour from any part of the room. Images become lifelike with a resolution of four-times the HD providing an unsurpassed picture quality. Rounding off the UHD screen excellence are the box speakers which provide heavier bass, noise reduction and depth & clarity with the SRS sound system and 5 band equaliser.

With Android Kitkat 4.4 and preloaded Google Play Store, the Micromax UHD TV not only provides seamless viewing experience but is also a Smart Android TV. With built-in Wi-Fi, consumers can access the Internet, watch online videos and run applications. Its Smart Somato-sensory remote lets you scroll through the menu as an Air Mouse or via voice commands and play the pre-loaded motion sensors games, doubling it as game controller. By using the M! Screen feature, users can multitask, customise, share data on a home network via DLNA by simply pairing their smartphone/ tablet with the television. Power packed with a quad core GPU, users are guaranteed of a seamless and efficient performance.

Technically, 4K refers to the 4096 x 2160 digital cinema resolution, but the term 4K is just so much catchier—many TV makers have been using it to market their ultra high-definition models even though their native screen resolution is 3840 x 2160, Micromax 4K UHD TV included. The TV runs on Android KitKat 4.4 preloaded with Google Play Store, Facebook, Twitter and more. There is 2.5 GB in-built memory (32 GB of expandable memory) and 1 GB RAM,   plethora of connectivity options like Wi-Fi hotspot, 3 USB ports and 2 HDMI ports. There are also some preloaded games like Reptide, Turbofly and Speed x3D.

My takeaways: This ultra high-definition television from Micromax delivers some of the most gorgeous images I have seen on any screen in recent months. It handles all sorts of content—ranging from HD broadcast and DVD or Blu-ray movies to live sports programmes and video games—with aplomb. It also provides very good audio quality. I was particularly impressed while watching some of the ongoing IPL cricket matches. Put simply, it’s time to get the movie theatre resolution in your own home.
