OVER the years, the air quality in Indian cities has deteriorated. During certain months of the year, living in the national capital region is like living in a gas chamber. The high concentration of air pollutants has an adverse effect on our health; inhaling these leads to major complications such as asthma and other respiratory diseases, and children and elderly are the most affected. A few months back, a WHO report put 13 Indian cities among the world’s top 20 most polluted cities. No wonder, there is growing preference for air purifiers in our homes and office spaces these days, but what about our vehicles?
Few may be aware but the air inside the car cabin can be five to six times more polluted than the outside air. Due to the closed environment in the car cabin, a 30-minute exposure to this polluted air can have serious health ramifications. The moot point: an individual who commutes daily needs to have some safeguards.
Sensing a market opportunity, water purifier brand Kent RO Systems has introduced an in-car air purifier, called Kent Magic. The device is good to look at, is portable and retails for R7,999. In India, the typical car commuter spends 5-6 hours a day sitting in his car. Since vehicular emissions and in-car pollution contribute heavily to air pollution as well as several health hazards, this smart device can effectively diminish the impact of air pollution, Kent RO officials informed.
Basically, Kent Magic is a smart device that cleanses in-car air silently. It removes dust, allergens, chemicals, viruses, odours, and other air pollutants from your car. It comes with high efficiency particulate arrestor (HEPA) dust collection technology with an inbuilt ioniser that keeps the air fresh. Its carbon filters neutralise unpleasant odours. The filters are priced at R1,000 and need to be changed annually. Company officials inform that the device can help eliminate up to 99% of fine participles and toxic gasses from your car.
With a lot of excitement, I fitted the Kent Magic in my Hyundai i10 car. It is fairly easy to set up; simply connect the adapter and plug in the air purifier. To start the Kent Magic, push the button either to I (low speed) or II (high speed). The air purifier cleans and purifies air with its unique 3-stage filtration process. First, the pre-filter catches bigger and visible dust particles, human and pet hair, etc. Second, the activated carbon filter removes chemical pollutants such as smoke, odour, formaldehyde, benzene and other volatile organic compounds. Third, HEPA filter catches and traps carcinogen particles that are larger than 0.3 micron.
In actual usage, the Kent Magic was pretty quick in purifying the air inside my car. Air becomes quite fresh and leaves the occupants in an elevated mood. The best part is that the air purifier is extremely portable, is easy to setup and makes negligible sound while functional. In short, a must-have equipment for those who spend a lot of time in their vehicles and are exposed to polluted air for long periods.
