Taking a cue from the fondness for online shopping in India, domestic handset maker Karbonn Mobiles has recently launched Karbonn FashionEye for those would like to buy clothes based on an outfit photo. With FashionEye, the company steps inside the world of artificial intelligence with an app called Fashion Eye that enables users to discover what they want in a tap. All one has to do is take a picture of an outfit—it can be a screen-shot or a saved picture in the gallery.
The app allows users to filter on the basis of gender, categories of clothes, just like other shopping platforms. The app then searches for possible matches of the outfit or pattern in the photo. The matches are pulled out of major shopping platforms such as Myntra, Snapdeal, Amazon, Flipkart, amongst others. During the review, the app could decode prints, patterns and colours automatically. It also shows price comparison of outfits on different sites, thus helping the user take an informed decision. In addition, the phone comes pre-installed with multiple apps such as NewsHunt, Flipkart, TrueCaller, Paytm, Saavn, UC Browser, Amazon and a couple of games.
What makes Karbonn’s FashionEye suitable for Indians, especially those who are more comfortable in their native language, is that the phone comes with 12 regional languages on the OS level itself. The user interface of the phone is easy and friendly and cuts down on multiple menus.
Users can schedule switch on and switch off times for the phone. This means, a user can schedule a particular switch-off time at night and again a re-boot time in the morning. Priced at R5,490, Karbonn FashionEye comes with 5-inch touchscreen HD IPS full lamination display with resolution of 1280 pixels by 720 pixels. The dual SIM device runs on Android 5.1 and supports Wi-Fi, 3G, 2G, Bluetooth. The biggest drawback is that the smartphone does not support 4G.
During the review, which includes basic phone use such as browsing, calling, video recording, games, etc., the performance of the phone was smooth. However, the phone heats up slightly if used for
graphic-intense games or watching videos such as movies. In terms of multi-tasking, the performance was not fast but the phone did not hang as well. It comes packed with a removable 2000 mAh battery which offers decent standby time and lasts 6-7 hours with data usage.
The Karbonn FashionEye is powered by 1.3 GHz quad-core with 1 GB of RAM. The phone packs 8GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 32 GB via a microSD card. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Karbonn FashionEye packs a 8-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 3.2-megapixel front shooter for selfies.
Inside the box, Karbonn packs the FashionEye right on top, which looks sleek from the front. But, as soon as you pick up the phone, you will see that it has a dash of sturdiness with its sandstone rear back panel. The sandstone finish in the rear panel makes the phone non-slippery and much comfortable to hold. Beneath the phone lies the pack containing paper manual, USB cable, wall adapter, and a pair of earphones. The speaker on the phone is on the back of the phone. This means that the sound gets a bit muffled when you place it on the desk or hold it hand. The speaker quality is also not remarkable.
Karbonn Fashion Eye is a phone that can be recommended to people who insist on having a device with Indian regional languages, easy user interface, a replaceable battery, excellent selfie camera capabilities, and a AI-driven shopping experience. If you don’t need anything from that list in your next smartphone—one can buy many other phones available in the market right now. To be clear, it’s fairly good at what Karbonn designed it to excel at.
