For quite some time now we have been hearing a lot about smart homes and commercial buildings, connected by mobile devices. Things such as refrigerators and microwaves, even home lighting, taking instructions from our mobile phones and tablets to operate automatically. While the concept of Internet of Things (IoT) is a hot topic these days, connected devices are yet to come mainstream. Lighting is integral to the smart home concept and Cube26, an
innovative tech firm, is trying to change this perception with its own invention. It has debuted an innovative smart bulb, called Iota Lite, in the IoT category, priced at R1,899 and is available on e-commerce site Flipkart.
Basically, Iota Lite is an affordable smart bulb which connects to your mobile phone via Bluetooth to let you light your room amazingly. It is specifically designed to provide connected consumers a distinct, hassle-free and fun way to light up their homes. Technical speak, this smart bulb is powered by Texas Instruments’ microprocessor and uses energy efficient Toshiba LED; the latter consumes one tenth the energy of a traditional bulb. Iota Lite has a lifespan of 15,000 hours and offers users the choice of 16 million colours to play with. It is compatible with devices running on Android version 4.0 and 5.
The Iota Lite is rated at 7W and offers 500 lumens of brightness. Powered by Bluetooth 4.0, it connects into an existing light fixture without the need for a hub or extra hardware. Iota Lite’s firmware is upgradeable too, with the potential for more features to be downloaded and accessed in the future.
At my end, I fixed the bulb into an
existing holder in the living area, downloaded the app on a sparingly used mobile phone and anxiously waited to light the room. Trust me, the
entire set up is kid’s play and it is an
altogether different experience to control the lighting via a mobile phone. Users can adjust the brightness of Lite using their smartphone. One can also remote control upto 7 bulbs with one app directly from their smartphone without a bridge. This unique smart bulb is loaded with interactive features and I’ll talk about some of them here.
Call/SMS alert: With its unique call alert feature, the Iota Lite blinks in a certain colour for an incoming call. This feature is beneficial when the user is around high noise area or when the smartphone is on silent mode. Users can also customise the app and add
select contacts to be alerted via the Lite.
Music sync: The Lite changes its colour and syncs with the rhythm of the music providing an elevated
experience. It syncs with the music playing in the user’s smartphone and provides a live, beautiful light and sound show. I played some songs stored on my device, and believe me the bulb truly glows like the ones similar to the discotheques of the 80s.
Though I did not try it out, but Iota Lite visually shows the weather forecast at the user’s location. The app also offers a simple customisation option through which users can choose any shade to denote different weather conditions. Among other interesting feature is the Preset Mode; this feature
allows users to adjust light according to one’s mood. Through its preset configurations users can customise different modes—reading mode, relaxation mode, party mode and more. Users can define their party mode and have Lite cycle through different colours at
random or use the blue, green and purple colours to define their relaxation mode. Users can program the Lite to match their routine. The Lite can be adjusted to go on and off without reaching out for a switch.
Iota Lite works like a regular light bulb but take my word, with this innovative bulb you can truly give life to light. Highly recommenced to the new-age consumer!
