The steady flow of new mobile phones and tablets shows no sign of slowing down in the market, for the simple reason that the Indian consumer continues to display a ferocious appetite for mobility devices across price points. There are more than 200 mobile phone brands in India and everybody wants a share of the mobile handset pie. While the established mobility brands continue to literally carpet-bomb the market with new devices at regular intervals, it is always nice to look at some of the offerings from lesser known brands and how they are able to ignite customer aspirations.

A few months back, I was excited to get my hands on a Jolla smartphone, developed by ex-Nokia employees, which has it own unique Sailfish operating system. More recently, I got an opportunity to check out a new phone from a US-based firm called InFocus, which has forayed into the Indian mobile market with its M2 smartphone. It is attractively priced at R4,999 and is available on e-commerce site,

On its part, has revealed that the InFocus M2 smartphone was sold out on the site within 12 hours of going live on sale recently.

More than 200,000 customers registered for this round of sale making InFocus M2 is one of the most anticipated smartphone sales of recent times. This was the second batch of InFocus M2 on sale after the initial batch of InFocus M2 sold out within three days of going live on on March 10. First 1,000 customers who purchased the M2 in the sale also won a stylish InFocus M2 flip cover. Coming from a leading American smartphone brand, Infocus M2 has been manufactured by Foxconn Technology Group. The device is packed with attractive features at an attractive price. Let us check out the finer details of the device.

Out of the box, the M2 comes across as a stylish phone that is built to last. It feels great in the hands and the phone’s back and sides provide a reassuring grip. The device features elegant soft curve to rest comfortably on any palm and matte ceramic finish for additional and stylish grip. The M2 sports a 4.2 inch WXGA (1280 x 768) display at 355 ppi, which promises to deliver exceptionally sharp images.

Probing the innards, the phone has a good hardware-software mix and has a lot going for it. Both the front and rear cameras are 8 megapixel with auto focus lens and clicks photographs with smile, face and voice detections. Front camera has diffused front facing LED for brighter selfies and super bright LED on the back for everything else which ensures good pictures in even low light conditions. The device has powerful 1.3 Ghz Quad Core processor and 2,010mAh Li-ion battery. With an internal memory of 8 GB, the phone supports expandable memory upto 64 GB and also comes with 1 GB RAM to easily keep up with the daily routines, and supports dual SIM.

This selfie optimised phone sports several unique features like Gesture Controls, TV-Direct Mode and comes with pre-installed super cool “Meitu-Beauty-FX” app that set it apart by miles from any of the smartphones available in its price segment.  Running on Android 4.4 KitKat, InFocus M2 supports USB & Bluetooth connectivity along with 3G and Wi-Fi functionality.

Let’s put aside all the technicalities and talk about how does this phone work. When used for over a week, let me be honest and say that this 4.2-inch device can feel awkward to use at times, especially because I am a die-hard user and fan of BlackBerry phones and regularly review some of the premium phones from established vendors. But take my word, the M2 is a great phone and it will surprise you with its superior performance. It performs steadily and its streamlined construction has a deluxe, comfortable feel. Its camera is pretty decent to take snaps, calls made from this device are crystal clear and browsing the Web is a breeze on this phone Even while watching a video, the phone is speedy and smooth with no lag whatsoever. The WXGA screen is good and the overall user interface—including the touch interface—is good and almost the same as any mid-range MNC phone.

In my summary, the M2 is a total value for money.
