In addition to opening Pixel Visual Core for third-party apps such as Instagram and Snapchat, Google will release AR stickers designed on winter sports theme in addition to the ones pushed back in December last year.

The Google Pixel Visual Core will open up the image processing features inside apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat

Google on Tuesday announced that the Pixel Visual Core feature is now available for the third party apps to enhance the photographs for social media. The Google Pixel Visual Core is a hidden custom-designed image optimising chip available on Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL for Pixel 2 users and the update enabling it will be rolled out in the coming days. This means that the Pixel 2 users will now be able to post more enhanced photos and selfies on Snapchat, Instagram and other third-party apps. The Pixel Visual Core was earlier available in the existing support for Android 8.1 stock camera app.

The Google Pixel Visual Core will open up the image processing features inside apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat where Google’s HDR+ technology will take the helm to further optimise the photographs. It was announced in October last year during the launch of new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones. Since the launch of the smartphone duo, this image co-processing chip has been lying dormant under the hood. Google recently activated the chips only for the stock camera app for Android 8.1 to harness the capabilities of HDR+.

Essentially, Google’s HDR+ technology boosts the brightness levels and detailing levels in an image to make it look more visually appealing. Pixel 2 users will be able to post HDR+ photos on third party apps after the update. However, in addition to this, Google has planned to roll out additional features to Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones. “These aren’t the only updates coming to Pixel this month. As announced last year, the goal is to build new features for Pixel over time so the phone keeps getting better,” said Ofer Shacham, Engineering Manager for Pixel Visual Core in a company’s statement.

Google will release AR stickers designed on winter sports theme in addition to the ones pushed back in December last year. The new winter sports theme will let users “dress up videos and photos with freestyle skiers, twirling ice skaters, hockey players, and more.” It is noteworthy that only the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL that are currently running on Android 8.1 will support this feature.
