The live stream of the special event by Google will start at 4pm (GMT) on Tuesday 4 October 2016, which in Indian time is 9:30 PM. After the much hyped Apple event last month, it is now Google’s turn to launch its brand new smartphones Pixel and Pixel XL in what looks to be an extravagant affair. We say it is going to be massive because the way the tech major has done the marketing is something very unlikely of the company. Many reports and rumours have been doing the rounds and based on them, there are some assumptions and expectations on the products which Google may unveil at the event. But, most notably, the thing that can be said is that the launch event will majorly be hardware centric.
As Google is all set to make some major hardware announcements on October 4, consumers can still see some signs of the changes and guess what to expect. Google has an annual ritual of announcing its flagship smartphones, yet this year appears to be distinct. Google in an enigmatic new advertisement had shown a box, devoid of context which metamorphosised into a rectangular shape symbolising a smartphone alongside the Google logo and ‘Oct 4’ written. What is Google launching at the Pixel event?
Apart from the new Amazon echo rival, virtual assistant, new Chromecast, a router, the most anticipated announcement that is expected to be at the Google launch is the brand new smartphones Pixel and Pixel XL. The tech giant has already planned to ditch its Nexus brand of smartphones and instead bring out the new ‘Pixel’. Apart from that, Google is expected to unwrap its latest Andromeda OS which is a hybrid of Android and Chrome OS.

What’s the big deal with Pixel phones? Who is really making these phones?
With the ads saying ‘Made by Google’, the company has made its intentions clear. The company for the first time will launch smartphones with its own branding, and is going to challenge the flagship devices of the top brands. As evident with other devices under the Pixel brand, Google will present these devices at premium pricing and will throw a direct challenge to Apple, Samsung, Lenovo among others. As far as rumours are concerned, the price of the Pixel smartphone can go up to $ 649, and it the smartphone lives up to it, will bring some serious changes in the technology market.
Will this be a pure Google phone?
The answer is YES. Though there have been speculations that the smartphone will be manufactured by HTC or some other brand, yet, needless to say, Pixel will have the name and logo of Google, which is something the company has never done before. Google wants Pixel phones to be put in a different light by taking full credit for it and using the tag of ‘Made by Google’. Though being Google’s products Nexus smartphones always had the support of other manufacturers. This is a change at the philosophical level when it comes to its flagship programs.
What will be the specifications of these phones?
Pixel smartphone will be powered by the latest 2.15 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of RAM, 1080p or quad HD displays. The rear cameras will be 12 megapixels and the front click will be of 8 megapixels. Add to it the new technology of fingerprint scanners and bigger batteries. Google will offer its latest Android Nougat 7.1 operating system and it will come before it comes for any other smartphone. According to the listed specifications, the Pixel smartphone will have 552 hours of standby time and 32 hours of talk time, because of its bigger battery. The Pixel XL battery will be bigger at 3,450mAh while that of Pixel will be 2,770mAh. When it comes to storage, the smartphone will come in 32GB and 128GB variants, with the option of expanding it to 256GB with an SD card. The phone seems to be a lightweight at 143 gms, with dimensions of 143.8 x 69.5 x 8.6 mm.
What else will be announced at the event?
Apart from the Google Pixel smartphones, the company si likely to launch the following products:
Andromeda: In the area of software, this will be one of the biggest announcements. Andromeda is a hybrid of Android and Chrome OS.
Google HOME: According to leaks, Google seems to have been preparing its own variant of a smart-home device similar to Amazon’s Echo. It was also announced at the IO event in May, so the launch dates may be revealed during this event.
Chromecast Ultra: The new and improved Chromecast with 4K video and HDR features. This product is expected to cost a lot more than the normal chrome cast.
Google Wi-Fi: Simplifying the technology of multiple router setup at homes, Google has come up with an innovative product, with mesh network features.
When will these smartphones launch in India?
There has been neither any official word, not any proper rumour which can indicate a confirmed launch date. Yet, it can be said that Google does not delay its launches in India, as seen with its Nexus phones. So, it can be expected that India will be able to lay a hand on the Pixel quite soon, whenever Google announces the date.
