Google is all set to launch its own smartphone, a step that could see it directly competing with Apple’s iPhone. According to a Telegraph report, the internet giant is in discussions with mobile operators about releasing a Google-branded phone.
Under the Nexus brand, Google already has a tie-up with companies like LG, Huawei to sell stock Android smartphones. By launching its own smartphone, Google seems to be trying its hands on hardware and software together.
According to the report, the new smartphone will be launched by the end of the year. Google take more control over design, manufacturing and software, the report said.
However, contrary to this report, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai had earlier this month said that tech giant has no plans to make its own smartphones right now and will continue to collaborate with its original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Pichai said that “our plan is still to work with hardware partners”.
“Nexus, we are investing more effort into them. You’ll see us put more thought into Nexus devices, there are categories beyond phones, we’ll be opinionated where we need to be to push the category forward,” he had said.
