Social media giant, Facebook has rolled out a new feature for its Messenger application. The feature enables users to share temporary live locations inside the messenger itself so that your family or your friend can locate you. Facebook has taken on giants like Google and Apple, in terms of offering a tool which is already offered by the companies. Facebook, in a blog, wrote: “People tell us that live location is super helpful when trying to coordinate with friends, telling people how close you are when you’re on your way to an appointment or even sharing where you are with your roommate when you’re on your way home at night.”
The live location can be shared for up to an hour. The sharing is optional and it can be shared with an individual or a group as well, depending on the user. Messenger, once a core part of Facebook, is a separate application now. The location feature was available on the app till 2015 as an automatic feature, but the company decided to do away with it. If you wish to use the new live location, you need to tap the location icon inside the app. The option may be available in the ‘More’ tab. The live location feature is now available globally.
Facebook had reportedly been testing the feature in Mexico, according to a Reuters report. The report added that Facebook had already completed the project but was working on optimising the battery usage of the feature. The company believes that this new feature can be used by people to coordinate with friends, for safety-related purposes among other things. It also wishes to build ‘all sorts of products’ on top of that.”
Recently, Google Maps had announced its own location-sharing feature, where once you share your location with your friends they will be able to view it on their phones and computers. The global tech giant claims that the new tool will be a more convenient way for you to let your friends know where you are without having the need to text or call them. Even Apple has a tracking option called ‘Find My Friends’ on its iPhone, iPad and Watch.
