The $3-billion Chinese device maker Coolpad has always attempted to be different in the marketplace. It claims to be the first to introduce a CDMA/GSM dual-mode phone; closer home, it was the first to introduce an affordable fingerprint-enabled smartphone.
Almost every other week, there’s a new mobile device that gets introduced in the market. Barring a few, such as the high-end Samsung Galaxy S8, OnePlus 5 or Honor 6X—which stand out primarily due to their good design, high-end specs and exceptional performance—most of these so-called ‘mobile wonders’ quickly fade away from consumers’ memory. There is little differentiation among them in terms of technology that goes inside them; appearance-wise too, they look identical and become just boring slabs in due course to time. The $3-billion Chinese device maker Coolpad has always attempted to be different in the marketplace. It claims to be the first to introduce a CDMA/GSM dual-mode phone; closer home, it was the first to introduce an affordable fingerprint-enabled smartphone.
“We have always believed in launching products that start a trend in the market,” says James Du, Global CEO, Coolpad Group. Carrying this strategy forward, the company has debuted a power-packed gaming smartphone ‘Cool Play 6’. The phone will be available on Amazon.in from September 4 in two colour variants, Gold and Black. We got our hands on the new device beforehand and here are our impressions about it. Coolpad has gained a reputation for making good-quality Android devices, and the Cool Play 6 is no exception. This gaming phone carries an affordable price tag of `14,999. Out of the box, the Cool Play 6 is quite the looker. Compared with other mid-range Android phones with plastic builds, the Cool Play 6 looks like an expensive phone.
It has a high-grade metal body and a bezels display. It has a beautiful face and comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD display with 1080 x 1980 pixels screen resolution. Believe me, you’ll be impressed with the build quality and feel. The speaker holes and the micro-USB port are located at the bottom. On the right side reside the conveniently placed power button, with the volume rockers a little higher up. And, at the top are the speaker jack and the SIM-card slot at the top left. Probing further, the Coolpad Cool Play 6 is powered by 1.95 GHz Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor and packs 6 GB of RAM, certainly making it the most affordable 6 GB RAM smartphone at the moment. Take my word, the device is bundled with enough RAM to do any kind of multitasking and gaming.
There’s an an innovative fingerprint sensor on the back side. The phone offers 64 GB of internal storage and packs 13 MP + 13 MP dual primary camera and a 8 MP front shooter for selfies. It runs on Android 7.1.1 and has 4000 mAh, non-removable Li-Po battery with a standby time up to 300 hours, with support for USB Type-C reversible connector and dual SIM (Nano). Coolpad also plans to provide the Android 8.0 OTA update by December 2017 for Cool Play 6. Switched on, the Cool Play 6’s screen comes to life with its 5.5-inch Full HD 1080p display enabling super crisp details and very good viewing angles. Packing 1080 x 1980 pixels screen resolution, the Cool Play’s screen is capable of handling full high definition video. I streamed some movie clippings from YouTube and the visual experience was outstanding.
In actual usage, the Cool Play 6 phone is pretty smooth, fast and responsive, and I did not notice any lagging. Its user interface is also stable and the phone did not stall on any occasion. Phone calls were crisp and clear, and I had no issues with this Coolpad device. I used its camera extensively and the image quality is good, and the shutter is rather snappy. On the battery front, the phone lasted more than two days of moderate use.
My takeaways: The Cool Play 6 is a beautiful, classy device and the best part is, it a good mid-range Android phone. Highly recommended! Estimated street price: Rs 14,999
