Palm Beach 550 is a feature-packed car multimedia system with great sound and good wireless connectivity features.

The German firm is a leading player in car infotainment and sound systems and it has introduced its new Symphony Series which includes six 2-DIN touch screen radios. This new series includes features such as PhoneLINK, a new high-end tuner, push-to-talk, Android music player among others.

We all have our favourite places for listening to music. Thanks to in-ear earphones or on-the-head earphones, it might be anywhere, say in a crowded metro, shopping mall or even at a friend’s party. For me, it is in a quiet corner of my TV room. However, I personally believe that music sounds best in a compact car. Just shut out the outside sound and immerse yourself in the music. No wonder, the car is where many people listen to the majority of their music, and our cars are becoming ever more connected. Recently I got a first-hand experience of what a connected car really means, courtesy the Blaupunkt Car Multimedia Palm Beach 550 system. The German firm is a leading player in car infotainment and sound systems and it has introduced its new Symphony Series which includes six 2-DIN touch screen radios. This new series includes features such as PhoneLINK, a new high-end tuner, push-to-talk, Android music player among others. The first radio from this series to enter the market, is Palm Beach 550. This model is priced at Rs 34,990 per piece; I got it installed in my Hyundai i10 for review purpose and here are my impressions about this new German innovation.

At the outset, let me say that the Palm Beach 550 has been designed and engineered to keep radio lovers entertained. The device has a compact design that supports 24-bit True Colour. It comes with push-to-talk and PhoneLINK feature which makes it easy to access your phone while on the move. Installation is a 15-minute job, provided you let a well-informed Blaupunkt official do the job. This product also supports Bluetooth technology; that means you can enjoy hands free and music streaming. This radio comes with 6.2-inch touchscreen and front and rear USB. There’s a high-end tuner, Android music player, front and rear USB, 24Bit-192kHz D/A converter, Navigation, DVD etc. For the uninitiated, PhoneLINK is an app (available on Google Play) for HDMI connection.

The Palm Beach 550 gives you plenty of options for playing music. In addition to the AM and FM radio stations, you can play DVDs, which offer the best car audio, and you can stream audio from your Android phone using Bluetooth. It also has a USB port on the faceplate, which allows you to use flash drives loaded with music. Once the Palm Beach 550 was up and running in my car, I decided to check out its sound quality. I played some music from a USB drive and it produced good audio. It boasts of enough EQ controls to find the optimal sound for your car. The Bluetooth connectivity allows you to make hands-free calls while you’re driving. There’s an external microphone provided, so the call quality is very good for your callers. I checked out the navigation aspect by connecting it with my phone’s Google Maps app and here again, it performed fairly well. In summary, I just loved the new Palm Beach 550. Sound is good and has prompted me to upgrade my speakers to exploit its full potential. Display is crisp and clear, touch response is also good. Overall, an impressive piece of work by the geeks at Blaupunkt.
