What’s new in Apple iPad Air, iPad mini and their price in India

Apple 2019 iPad Air and iPad mini: Apple has not changed the fundamental aspects of both the iPad models but even then there are many changes

Apple on Monday threw a surprise by announcing a refresh model for the iPad Air and a new iPad mini. The iPad mini supports Apple Pencil, in addition to the iPad Air, the numbers in the moniker for which have been completely dropped by the company. What else has changed? The displays on both new iPad models are now bigger – 10.5-inch on Air and 7.9-inch on mini, the processor has been updated, and a better design.

The iPad Air costs Rs 44,900 for the Wi-Fi model and Rs 55,900 for Wi-Fi + LTE model. The Apple iPad mini, on the other hand, will be available at Rs 34,900 and Rs 45,900 for the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + LTE models, respectively. Both the iPad models have two storage options – 64GB and 256GB – the individual pricing for which will be revealed later. The iPad Air and iPad mini come in Silver, Gold, and Space Grey colours.

Apple’s new iPad models are coming to India “soon”, probably in the second wave. Both the new iPad models will be available to buy Apple Authorised Resellers in India, including Flipkart, Paytm, and likely Amazon.

What’s new?

Apple has not changed the fundamental aspects of iPad Air and iPad mini but even then there are many changes that have been anticipated for a long time. The iPad mini now supports the 2018 version of Apple Pencil – so does the iPad Air. The iPad Air and iPad mini are powered by Apple’s A12 Bionic chip that was introduced last year with the new iPhone models. The Cupertino-headquartered giant says the iPad Air can deliver “a 70 per cent boost in performance and twice the graphics capability” while the iPad mini is capable of “delivering three times the performance and nine times faster graphics”. Both the new iPad models have ‘advanced’ Retina Displays with True Tone technology, Apple claims, can offer an “immersive visual experience”.

“Today the iPad family takes two big leaps forward with an all-new 10.5-inch iPad Air that brings high-end size, features and performance at a breakthrough price, and a major upgrade to the 7.9-inch iPad mini, which also brings Apple Pencil, Retina display and the A12 Bionic chip to the many customers that love its compact size,” said Phil Schiller, SVP of worldwide marketing at Apple, in a company release.
