Global electronics giant Amazon has unveiled its latest smart speaker with a touchscreen. The new voice activated speaker can now also be used for making video calls.
Global electronics giant Amazon has unveiled its latest smart speaker with a touchscreen. The new voice activated speaker can now also be used for making video calls. The device will be available in white and black colour variants. The Amazon Echo Show will start shipping from June 28, but can already be pre-order in the US. The speaker comes with a price tag of $229.99 (around Rs 15,000). Similar to the earlier generation of Alexa-enabled Echo speakers, even the Amazon Echo Show will respond to your voice commands and will be able to control smart home devices. The interesting thing, however, is the new touchscreen feature.
The Amazon Echo Show will arrive with a 7-inch touchscreen display. The device also has a 5 MP camera at the front. This essentially enables customers to work on a number of things like attending video and voice calls, that too with other Echo devices. The Internet’s powerhouse retailer has been leaning on its vocal digital assistant to spread the company’s AI system everywhere, certainly beyond the original Echo speaker, into phones, appliances and other products. The Show will also be able to play content from YouTube and other applications on the internet. When it comes to the video calling feature, consumers will be enabled to call anyone with an Echo device or a smartphone which has the Alexa app installed.

Amazon Echo Show has a new feature called ‘Drop In’. This functionality actually allows you to connect with other Echo Show users even when the person on the other side may not even accept the call. The users on the other side can now choose to answer such calls only via voice. The device includes Dolby-powered speakers for music playback for ‘crisp vocals and dynamic bass response’.
This new device by Amazon is the company’s fourth major Echo-branded model. The first Amazon Echo was launched three years ago, in 2014. The company then followed it by introducing the smaller Amazon Echo Dot, called the Echo Tap. In April this year, Amazon had unveiled the Echo Look. It has a camera but the built-in screen is absent.
This is a new generation of voice-enabled smart speakers where the market is growing quite rapidly. Amazon has been dominating the sector since its inception. However, it is not the only company which is playing in this sector. Even Google’s parent company Alphabet has shown interest in penetrating deeper into the smart-speakers segment, with its Google Home. Even Apple is expected to be launching its own SIRI powered speaker at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), on June 5. Even Microsoft has unveiled Cortana-powered Harman Kardon speaker named Invoke. Harman Kardon is owned by Samsung.
Market research company eMarketer has reported that the Amazon Echo will be capturing over 70 percent of the market while Google Home will manage only around 23 percent. The report also adds, that 35.6 million Americans will expectedly make use of a voice-enabled device for at least once per month in 2017.
