After running the introductory purchase for over three months, Amazon has now opened sales for its Alexa-powered speakers – Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot – in India. All three Amazon Echo devices are now available to buy from the e-commerce website without the invitation. Alongside, Amazon has announced that Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot are now available via 350 offline stores across 20 Indian cities that includes Reliance Digital, Croma, Vijay Sales, Crossword. In line with this announcement, Amazon has now updated its voice assistant Alexa to allow calling and messaging in India.
The Amazon Echo devices began selling in India under a pilot programme where the users who requested invitations could only purchase them. The quantity of the devices was limited to 1 unit per user across the range that includes Amazon Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot in India. The Echo devices are now available to purchase for everyone without requiring invitations. However, there is a 3 unit per user quantity limit.
Amazon Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot price in India
The Amazon Echo devices were initially available in India at introductory prices that were discounted under the pilot programme back in October last year. Later, Amazon ended the discounts and started selling the Echo devices at their listed prices. The listed prices for the Amazon Echo devices are continuing for all the users now.
The Amazon Echo Dot is available at Rs 4,499 for two colour options – Black and White. The Amazon Echo is selling at Rs 9,999 in three colours – Black, Grey, and White, while the top model Amazon Echo Plus costs Rs 14,999 in a single Black colour option.
Alexa to Alexa voice calling and messaging in India
At the time of launch, Alexa – Amazon’s voice-powered AI assistant – could do a bunch of chores along with the support for Indian English accent and other regional languages. The features such as playing music, radio stations, ordering products on Amazon, news reading from Indian news outlets have been available in India. Amazon has now activated the Alexa to Alexa voice calling feature in India along with the messaging and Drop-in features. The Alexa to Alexa voice calling feature will allow the Echo device owner to communicate with other Echo device user who has registered their mobile numbers for the service – something that the messaging feature also requires to run. The Echo Drop-in feature will allow switching among the devices in a multi-device setup for room to room calling.
