State-owned telecom company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has revised its free voice calling benefits and it might be a huge disappointment for customers, especially those ones who could not afford higher rates charged by others. In the latest announcement, BSNL has decided to discontinue providing free Sunday voice calling benefits from landlines from February 1 respectively. But there is some relief for Calcutta Landline users, as the telecom might be providing some schemes to make it easy for the customers. Calcutta Telephones (CaITel) Chief General Manager S P Tripathi said, “BSNL is going to withdraw the free Sunday calling benefit from February 1. This will happen nationally. But, from Calcutta Telephones, we are working on some plans which I think will mitigate the impact on our customers.” As this service gets effective, the BSNL landline users will have to pay for the calling, similar to that on weekdays. This will apply to Landline/Combo/FTTH broadband plans and will be applicable to both existing and new customers. This revision comes after BSNL had curbed night voice calling in mid-January, following which free night calling is offered from 10.30 pm instead of 9 pm to 6 am.

“BSNL has already revised the night voice calling scheme in mid-January after which free calling is offered from 10.30 pm instead of 9 pm,” CalTel Technical Secretary to the CGM Goutam Chakraborty said. Initially, the free night voice calling was from 9 pm to 7 am. The new plans have been sent to the BSNL headquarters for approval. Officials expect that the plans will be cleared soon. Currently, Calcutta has six lakh fixed landline connections out of 12 million connections across the country. Free night calling and free Sunday calling was introduced by BSNL from August 21, 2016, following which customers were able to make free unlimited calls on any mobile or landline number in the country on Sundays from August 21. BSNL has also launched unlimited BB249 plan which offers unlimited Broadband internet for merely Rs 249.

As reported by Hindustan Times, in a separate development, BSNL had sealed a deal with the ministry of law and justice for providing high-speed internet and cloud connectivity to as many as 900 subordinates and district courts in remote locations including majorly Jammu and Kashmir and Northeastern states.
