Tata International sets up fourth truck body manufacturing plant

Tata International DLT has expanded its trailer and truck body manufacturing capacities at its Pune facilities.

Tata International DLT has expanded its trailer and truck body manufacturing capacities at its Pune facilities. This is the company’s second plant in Pune and fourth in the country. It manufactures special trailers and Type Code AIS 113 trailers. Tata International DLT is the only company in the trailer industry to have this certification which indicates enhanced safety standards. The new plant has started production from October 1.

Tata International DLT, a 50:50 JV between Tata International and Dutch Lanka Trailers Manufacturers, Sri Lanka, a Tata Enterprise, leads the trailer market in the country. Tata DLT started as a sole supplier to Tata Motors and then diversified into the open market and started supplying to other companies. Tata DLT had set up its mega plant in Pune in 2011 with capacity to make 500 trailers a month. The company manufactures products under the brand name Tata DLT.

Tata DLT has got the Trailer Type Code AIS 113’ certification from the Automotive Research Association of India. These new standards for the trailer industry were introduced in April 2016. Trailer manufacturing is dominated by the unorganized players and Tata DLT are among the players helping to raise the share of organized sector in the trailer industry in India.

Rajeev Batra, COO, Tata International DLT, said with the addition of this facility, the Tata DLT product basket has been enhanced to include car carriers, trucks, tractor carriers and tip trailers along with standard trailers.

This facility will ramp up the company’s production capacity to meet the rising market demand in the heavy commercial transportation industry. The capacity of all four plants put together is at 5,400 trailers per annum. The new plant has capacity to make 100 special trailers per month or 1,200 special trailers a year. The company has invested R21 crore in the company. It may consider exports in the near future.

Tata International DLT has three other manufacturing facilities situated in the major trailer markets of Pune, Rajasthan and Jamshedpur. More than 16,550 Tata DLT trailers are running on Indian roads. Tata DLT grew by 26% in FY16 in terms of numbers of trailers sold and is looking at improved sentiment in the trailers market in India.
