After river taxis in Assam, Ola kickstarts operations in Mizoram

Cab-hailing company OLA, today, has announced the launch of operations in North East state of Mizoram. The company will be starting its operations from the capital, ‘Aizawl’. The move was followed by a discussion with the state government. OLA claims to have signed over 200 people as potential drivers in the Mizoram’s capital.

This marks as the second partnership for Ola. Earlier this year, the company signed a MoU with the transportation department of Assam to pilot river taxi service in the state.

Keeping Mizoram’s reality in mind, Ola is one of the early entrants in the Mizoram market. Till now, local cab drivers, with majority of them driving Maruti 800 or Zen, were the only transportation service/s you would get in Aizawl. With airport at a distance of over 45 minutes, the two major cab-problems that Mizos face are, high cab costs and less variety of cars.

Commenting on the expansion, Vijay Ghadge, VP operations of OLA, quoted, “Ola’s partnership with the Government of Mizoram extends our commitment towards building mobility for a billion Indians. Apart from providing a smart transportation platform to the people, we also expect to further boost the entrepreneurship opportunities for driver partners in the city and beyond. With the Mizoram Government’s vision to make the state a major tourism destination, we see great potential to launch Ola’s services in Aizawl.”

Ola has partnered with car manufacturers  and financial institutions to enable micro-entrepreneurship in the state. With the prior partnership, Ola gives discounts to drivers to buy cars, while with the latter, it helps them purchase the car with low interest rates.

Talking on the transportation infrastructure, the Finance minister of Mizoram PU Lalsawta, said, “Given the unique terrain, it is our constant endeavour to give residents of Aizawl a reliable and strong transport infrastructure. To achieve this, it is important to invest in a sustainable transport infrastructure that reduces congestion and offers a hassle-free experience.

Commenting on the micro-entrepreneurship model, he added, “Companies like Ola also help boost entrepreneurship by giving people access to a comfortable livelihood that offers consistent earnings. We are certain that bringing India’s most popular transport platform to Aizawl will enhance the mobility experience for citizens and tourists alike.”
