The perception of India’s ports being inefficient is only partially correct, as the country’s private ports are a match for their Chinese counterparts, holds HSBC. A good monsoon, low base, and resilient consumption are likely to see 5.2% CAGR in port throughput over FY16-19, with private ports continuing to gain share, it says. In the long term, the Make in India programme, Sagarmala, and regulatory change will drive sectoral growth.
