Taking a jibe at Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over his remark that decisiveness in the face of obstruction has been the NDA Government’s hallmark, former union minister and Congress leader Anand Sharma on Sunday said lashed out at the Centre for not fulfilling its poll promises and dubbed its policies as ‘anti-people and anti poor’.
“Arun Jaitley had said that one year back, there was the situation of despair and now it has reversed. Now, there is expectation and hope among the people. I accept the word ‘reversal’ but one year back that had been said during the Lok Sabha election campaigns, the dreams that were shown to the citizens of the country, the promise that were made to every sections of the society, from all these there was the environment of hope and not of despair. There was a change in hopes and expectations. But today there is despair,” Sharma said.
“Yes there is a reversal, the hope of May 2014 because of the policies, insensitivity, and arrogance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP has been converted into despondency. That faith and trust has been broken because of the actions and acts of this government. I don’t have the hesitation in saying that the one year of this government was policies of anti-people, anti poor,” he added.
Questioning the Centre’s irresponsible behaviour in not making important appointments of various organisations, Sharma listed out many of the important positions of various research centers and organisations that were left vacant.
“The Finance Minister had earlier said that there was policy paralysis in the UPA government. If the Prime Minister and this government is decisive then what is the reason that important positions are left vacant? There is no chief in the Indian Council of Agriculture Research, the head of Defence Research Development Organisation was insulted and removed,” Sharma told the media here.
“Since he [Narendra Modi] became the Prime Minister, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research was left vacant. S.N. Bose National Center for Basic Sciences, it was without a dean. Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics from 10 months it is without a head. Indian Council of Medical research is without a chief,” he added.
Sharma alleged that there is a paralysis of decision making right now at the Centre.
“The list is long. Is there any answer? Are these positions important or not? Because the decisions are centralised, these appointments have not been made. Does Mr. [Arun] Jaitley call this a decisive government? It is a paralysis of decision making, creation of the mindset of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his method of functioning,” he added.
The Congress leader also raised questions on the Centre’s transparency.
“If they believe in transparency, why the CIC has not been appointed? Why the Information Commissioners have not been appointed? Why the Lokpal has not been formed? Why the CVC has not been appointed?” he asked.
Sharma further said the former UPA regime had brought in the Lokpal, the Right to Information Act (RTI) and the Whistleblower Protection Act.
“We believed in transparency. We brought in the Lokpal, the Right to Information Act. Whistleblower Protection Act was brought by the UPA.
Instead of giving us the credit, they insult us. You have enough humiliated us. But get out of the mentality of electioneering. It is time for them to give account not to talk of the past and we have enough to talk of the past when a national debate takes place. These people are not lily-white,” he added.
Jaitley had earlier said that there was an environment of gloom when the NDA took over the reins from the UPA
” That has been now replaced by hope and excitement. Though we are growing at the range of 7 to 8 percent, yet there is a restlessness to grow even faster to achieve the real potential of India. Prime Minister has visited eighteen countries and India has been able to get a prominent place in the global arena,” he said.
