India and Kazakhstan have discussed bilateral prospects for cooperation and development in the transport sector.

A statement issued by the Embassy of Kazakhstan in New Delhi said Saturday that a delegation of the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy led by its president Askar Mamin had called on both Shipping and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu, and had reached understandings and agreements designed to facilitate the movement of goods between the two countries.

The purpose of the visit and the interaction was to determine the transport capacity between the two countries, and consider development of the North-South Corridor, besides the possibility of forming an effective supply chain for trade flows between India and Kazakhstan, which is one of the largest markets of the Eurasian continent.

The bilateral discussions also focused on the vast potential of Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran Railway network to enable access to the Indian market.

The Kazakh delegation also interacted with representatives of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on logistical opportunities for export-import operations in the region.

The delegation, which visited India on June 10 and 11, was also acquainted with development projects and held talks with major logistic companies at the Mundra Seaport.

The meeting was also attended by Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to India Bulat Sarsenbayev.
