Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is expanding its manufacturing facilities in India on account of a surge in demand for automatic scooters. With the company’s fourth plant in Gujarat expected to be operational by early 2016, it is targeting a marketshare of 60% in the automatic scooter segment by 2016. The total capacity at the four plants in India would be about 5.8 million units after the expansion.
Launching two versions of Aviator and Activa i, Keita Muramatsu, HMSI president and CEO, said that with this launch, Honda has completed eight two-wheeler launches in six months.
“India is a focus market for Honda. Today, one in every four two-wheelers sold by Honda worldwide is from India. We will become number one in two-wheeler market for Honda globally within next two to three years,” he said.
