Almost all the automotive companies in and around Chennai have taken a major blow on the production front owing to unprecedented rains, which flooded the entire city and its outskirts last week. All the companies, which FE spoke to, admitted production loss of four to five days and resumed their production effective Sunday, they said.

Starting from Hyundai, Ford and Nissan on the passenger vehicles side to Ashok Leyland, Daimler on the commercial vehicles front to Apollo Tyres and JK Tyres and Royal Enfield on the tyre and bike fronts have said loss of production was due to inundation of their plants. However, all the companies declined to comment on the monetary loss. When contacted a Hyundai spokesperson, said: “Due to the recent inclement weather in Chennai and in view of the safety of employees, the management of HMIL decided to call off the third shift on December 1 and all shifts on December 2, 3 and 4. Normal operations resumed on December 5, 2015. However, any loss to production/mandays can only be assessed by the end of the month.”
