Former Facebook India Head Umang Bedi has joined the local language news and entertainment aggregator Dailyhunt as its President. Former Facebook India Head Umang Bedi has joined the local language news and entertainment aggregator Dailyhunt as its President. Umang Bedi will look to scale up the revenues and user base of Dailyhunt, which currently commands more than 80 million monthly active users. Notably, Umang Bedi will report to the company’s founder Virendra Gupta.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to drive scale via Dailyhunt’s ‘Made in India’ platform. The intention is to serve the unmet, under-served needs of Indians who live in tier 2, 3, 4 cities and rural areas and provide them with personalised, relevant, meaningful experiences,” Umang Bedi said, according to a press release by Dailyhunt.
Umang Bedi, who resigned from social media giant Facebook in January this year, had joined as its Managing Director, India and South Asia in June 2016. In Facebook, Umang Bedi was mainly responsible for building and maintaining strategic relationships with top clients and regional agencies in the country. Interestingly, he had taken over the reins from Kirthiga Reddy, who had then returned to the US to take on a new role at the company’s headquarters at Menlo Park.
Dan Neary, Vice President, Asia Pacific, Facebook had said during Umang Bedi’s appointment at Facebook that he is a ‘proven business executive’. “India is known for its great talent pool and we are really pleased to have Umang Bedi, a proven business executive to lead our business in India,” Dan Neary said.
Umang Bedi who had joined Facebook after a stint in Adobe, has close to two decades of leadership experience covering sales, marketing and partnerships where he successfully built teams and grew businesses for multinational companies. At Adobe, Umang Bedi was involved in growing the company’s business in India.
An alumnus of Harvard Business School, Umang bedi is also a recipient of the ‘40 Under Forty: India’s Hottest Business Leaders Award 2014’ in 2014. “For me it’s a promising opportunity to participate in India’s digital growth, and I can’t think of a better place to be at,” Umang Bedi had expressed during his appointment in 2016.
