A day before the annual Computex technology conference, Taiwanese technology firm Asus unveiled over 10 new products, including a new robot called Zenbo.

The Zenbo robot is priced at $599, and will function as a home assistant. Asus also launched its new Zenfone 3 smartphone series and a ZenBook 3 laptop which is thinner than the Apple MacBook Air.

Asus chairman Jonney Shih said during the launch that Zenbo robot is their effort at ensuring “robotic computing for every household”. During the demonstration Shih got the robot to turn on the lights, take a selfie, as well as talk into the crowd. With the launch of the robot, Asus joins the new trend of technology companies launching smart assistant devices for homes. However, in Asus’ case it is also full fledged robot. Asus’ robot can walk around a house on its own and has a display in its head where it can show all the relevant information. Asus has not specified technical details or availability details for the robot. Zenbo is designed to provide assistance, entertainment, and is enabled to conduct some specific functions like assist senior family members with doctor’s appointments, medication and exercise schedules.
