Bharti Infratel Q1 profit rises 71% as cell drops factor addressed

Telecommunications tower company Bharti Infratel on Tuesday reported a 71% year-on-year jump in its first-quarter net profit, boosted by expansion of networks by the top three operators Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, and Idea Cellular, as they added more sites to reduce instances of call drops, and offer high-margin 3G/4G data services.

During the April-June quarter, Bharti Infratel’s net profit grew from R442.4 crore to R756.2 crore during the same period a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges. Revenue also increased by 7% during the quarter from R3,003.1 crore to R3,210.6 crore, said the telecommunications tower company, majority-owned by Bharti Airtel, the largest operator. The latest quarterly results also include Bharti Infratel’s proportionate profit of R276.9 crore in Indus Towers. Bharti Infratel holds 42% stake in Indus Towers, a three-way joint venture with Vodafone India and Idea Cellular.

During the three months through June, Bharti Infratel added 2,956 towers, taking the total number of such towers to 89,352 at the end of the quarter.
